Jammu and Kashmir State Commission for Women (JKSCW), Chairperson, Nayeema Ahmad Mahjoor Saturday said the Commission has registered 2819 cases of crime against women since its inception.
“Since I took over, the Commission registered 87 cases out of which 70 per cent were decided,” Nayeema said while delivering a lecture on “Role of Women’s Commission in Fighting Crime Against Women,” to the students of the Department of Law, Central University of Kashmir (CUK) at Nowgam-I academic block.
Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Mehraj ud Din Mir, Head of the Department, Dr. Sheikh Showkat, former Dean Faculty of Social Sciences, Jamia Millia Islamia, Prof. M Z Khan, Controller of Examinations, Dr. Nazir Ahmad Gilkar and other faculty members were also present on the occasion.
She said the Commission was established in 1999 to protect the women’s rights and advance the cause of women in the State. Nayeema said the Commission is actively involved in dealing with cases of dowry, harassment, domestic violence, torture/cruelty, divorce, desertion, maintenance, custody of children, cheating /fraud, and harassment at workplace.
“The purpose of having a women’s Commission is to create an independent watchdog and guardian for women, especially in a backward state such as J&K, where a large number of women may be unaware of their rights and unable to protect them, using the usual enforcement mechanisms,” she added.
CUK Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Mehraj ud Din Mir, while speaking on the occasion, said the main purpose of inviting the JKSCW chairperson was to encourage the students and make them understand that they can also scale new heights, like Ms Nayeema Mehjoor has in her career. He said that Nayeema has carved a niche in the field of broadcast journalism and has become a household name.
Prof. Mehraj ud Din said the University would collaborate with JKSCW to aware the women about their rights and the ways and means to protect them. He said the varsity would also hold seminars and workshops on women empowerment.
Head of the Department, Dr. Sheikh Showkat, former Dean Faculty of Social Sciences, Jamia Millia Islamia, Prof. M Z Khan, Controller of Examinations, Dr. Nazir Ahmad Gilkar also spoke on the occasion and discussed the topic threadbare. They said the Commission have a platter full of work, despite the fact that majority of the cases related to persecution of women go unreported and under-reported. They also called for taking measures for further women empowerment.
The lecture was followed by question-answer session. Nayeema Ahmad Mahjoor, later felicitated the students who recently won the moot court competition at the University of Kashmir. Assistant Prof Gulafroz conducted the programme proceedings.
All the women have been given right live good life by Prophet MUhammad S.A.W. so it is obligatory to respect them though it is a mother, sister , wife, duaghter or other. Islam does not allow to treat any woman badly but it is unfortunate that this tender creation is anyhow treated badly by some unhuman like persons. I request woman folk to protect themselves from errors that is their diginity in the sight of Allah and MUHAMMAD
