SRINAGAR: Ladakh Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena on Monday laid the foundation stone for 30 smart bus shelters, with 15 each planned in Leh and Kargil, officials said.

The shelters have been designed keeping in view Ladakh’s harsh climatic conditions and the needs of students, senior citizens, women and daily commuters who often have to wait for buses in the open during winter.
The facilities will have GPS-enabled passenger information systems, LED displays, GPS-based bus tracking and real-time estimated time of arrival information.
They will also feature CCTV surveillance, SOS and emergency buttons, first-aid kits, emergency oxygen cylinders and fire extinguishers. Tactile tiles and accessible pathways will be provided to make the shelters more inclusive for visually impaired and other passengers with accessibility needs.
Each shelter will have a 2 KW solar photovoltaic system, battery storage and a hybrid inverter. The solar power will be used for Wi-Fi, passenger information displays and other essential facilities, reducing dependence on grid electricity.
The shelters will also incorporate elements of Ladakhi architecture, combining modern technology with the region’s cultural identity and heritage.
