Police department has promoted 33 police officials for being the part of the Kulgam encounter that killed the top Lashkar militant, Abu Qasim last week, reports said.

The Director General of Police, K Rajendra Kumar who was in Kulgam yesterday has granted 16 out of turn promotions to police men, besides elevating 17 SPOs as constables.

Rajendra, reports said, also gave monetary award to the officers and men of Kulgam police who initiated and participated in encounter in which Abu Qasim was killed.

DGP was accompanied by IGP Kashmir SJM Gillani, DIG Nitish Kumar, SSP Awantipora Irshad Hussain, SSP Shopian Altaf Khan and SSP Islamabad Abdul Jabbar.

Notably, Qasim was the prized-scalp for the police having a bounty of Rs 20 lakh on his head. His killing made Kashmir police chief, IGP Gillani to asset, “It’s a major success.” Being the top LeT commander, Qasim was the reckoning force for his outfit, who singlehandedly ran its major operations. His killing evoked a great public participation, forcing three districts to fight for securing his mortal remains. Qasim’s funeral also saw militants giving him 21 gun salute.

Meanwhile, the SSP office Kulgam confirmed the reports of promotion of its 33 policemen.
