The statement of Hurriyat (M) Chairman, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, about elections has been welcomed by newly formed “Amami Mtahida Mahaz” (AMM), comprising of unionist leaders like M Yousuf tarigami and Hakim Yasin.

Terming Mirwaiz Umar Farooq’s statement on poll boycott, a step ahead, Awami Mutahida Mahaz (AMM) on Thursday said the remarks of Hurriyat (M) chairman are welcome but solution to any issue lies in a democratic process and the same gets substantiated by the global experiences.

“There can be ideological differences and different political viewpoints, but history bears testimony to the fact that importance of electoral process cannot be undermined as it has never diluted the importance of Kashmir problem, a statement from Front said.

It added “AMM is of the firm belief that such forums which come into existence through electoral process are useful and can open-up avenues to discuss and debate such important issues.”

The statement urged “Need of the hour is that both mainstream as well as the voices of dissent should identify commonalities and common meeting grounds, while respecting and accommodating each others’ political point of view and thereby resulting concerns.”

The statement further said, “It is imperative for both political mainstream as well as the voices of dissent to desist from undermining each others’ importance and relevance vis-à-vis their defined principles.”

Pertinently, Mirwaiz a day before termed elections “a non-issue”.
