5.4-Magnitude Earthquake Jolts Andaman and Nicobar Islands

   

SRINAGAR: A moderate earthquake measuring 5.4 on the Richter scale struck the Andaman and Nicobar Islands at 12:06 pm (IST) on Sunday, the National Centre for Seismology (NCS) reported.

According to the NCS, the tremor’s epicentre was located about 90 km deep beneath the region. There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage.

However, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) recorded the quake at a slightly higher magnitude of 6.07, with a depth of 10 km (6 miles), while the United States Geological Survey (USGS) measured it at 5.5.

Authorities said the situation is being closely monitored, and further details are awaited from disaster management officials. Residents in several parts of the islands reportedly felt tremors, but no major disruption was observed.
