SRINAGAR: The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) Wednesday informed the Parliament that a total of 787 cases under UAPA were registered while as 750 persons were arrested in Jammu and Kashmir between 2018 to 2020.

The Minister of State (MoS) Nityanand Rai in the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) responded to the queries in parliament including statistics regarding the number of cases registered and number of persons arrested under UAPA

In a written reply to the House, the MoS as per news agency KNO said that the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) compiles the data on crime as reported to it by States and Union Territories and publishes the same in its annual publication ‘Crime in India’.

He said that the latest published report is of the year 2020.

Giving figures the MoS said that a total of 787, cases were registered while a total of 750 persons were arrested under UAPA in J&K between 2018 to 2020.

Giving year-wise breakup, the MoS said that in the year 2018 a total of 245 cases were registered and 177 persons were arrested.

In 2019, he informed that 255 cases were registered and 227 persons were arrested.

The minister said that 287 cases were registered in 2019 and 346 persons were arrested.

The Union Minister further said that cases under UAPA are investigated by state police and the National Investigation Agency (NIA). “As far as NIA is concerned, so far 49 special courts have been designated across the country for the speedy trial of NIA cases,” the MoS said.
