Journalist fraternity of Kashmir on Monday staged a sit-in protest against the arrest of journalist Aasif Sultan, at press colony in Srinagar.

The protest demonstration organized by the Kashmir Journalist Association was later joined by Kashmir Working Journalist Association, Kashmir Press Photographers Association and Kashmir Press Videographers Association. The protesting journalists were demanding the release of journalist Aasif Sultan, who was arrested, by Jammu and Kashmir Police last month.

Aasif Sultan was sent to the Central Jail Srinagar in judicial custody till September 22, by the court. Police have said they arrested the scribe for his involvement in a militant attack. But the publication for which the scribe worked insisted Sultan was arrested for his longer narrative on Burhan Wani, the new age militant leader whose killing in 2016 summer plunged Kashmir into unrest.

Earlier, In this regard, various journalist associations including, the Kashmir Working Journalist Association, the Kashmir Journalist Association, the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ), the Indian Journalist Union (IJU), and the Kashmir Editors’ Guild (KEG) had also called for his immediate release.
