SRINAGAR

Amid massive demonstration, agitated protesters Tuesday locked up Para-medical staff in a room at Sub-District Hospital Sumbal for an hour alleging that continuous absence of doctors in the hospital has been affecting patient care system badly.

The protesters after locking up the Para-medical staff blocked Srinagar-Hajin road for hours forcing police and civil administration officials to rush to the spot.

Reports said that there were scores of patients at the ticket counter waiting for the doctors, but till 12 noon no doctor turned up in the hospital. ‘As attendants swell up, they staged protest and chanted anti-medicos slogans. Some of the attendants locked up the Para-medical staff and even closed the main gate of the hospital. The protesters hit to road and blocked vehicular movement,” eyewitnesses told CNS.

“This hospital is in shambles. Doctors come and go at will, leaving patients at the mercy of compounders. Lot of patients had arrived here for Ultra Sound check up but there was no doctor forcing people to lock the gate of the hospital,” said a protester.

After the failure of the Medical Officer Dr Hayat to pacify the protesters, Tehsildar Sumbal and other police officials rushed to spot who assured action against the ‘irresponsible’ doctors. “It is unfortunate that some of the doctors don’t perform their duties and are frequently found absent from the hospital. I have directed the authorities to take action against such medicos,” he said.
