SRINAGAR: The Jammu and Kashmir Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) on Wednesday arrested a Junior Assistant posted in the office of the Assistant Commissioner (General), Jammu, for allegedly demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs 15,000.
The accused, Ajay Kumar, son of late Ram Murti and a resident of Gango Chack in Gajansoo, Jammu, allegedly demanded Rs 20,000 from a complainant for issuing a marriage certificate under the Special Marriage Act, 1954. The amount was later negotiated to Rs 15,000, according to the ACB.
The complainant approached the ACB after refusing to pay the bribe. A preliminary verification by the bureau found prima facie evidence of the alleged demand.
The ACB subsequently registered FIR No. 11/2026 under Section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988, as amended in 2018, at Police Station ACB Central J&K, Jammu.
A trap was then laid and Kumar was allegedly caught red-handed while demanding and accepting Rs 15,000 from the complainant. The money was recovered from his possession in the presence of independent witnesses, the ACB said.
The bureau later conducted searches at the accused’s residential premises in the presence of an Executive Magistrate and independent witnesses.
Further investigation is underway.
