To press for their regularisation demand, the causal labourers Friday pitched a tent inside Srinagar’s Pratap Park to sit on the “fast unto death” protest.

While seeking justice, the labourers of different government departments assembled under the banner of J&K Casual/ Daily Wagers Forum, threatened their protest will only end after government fulfilling their demands.

“We are not staging a drama here,” said one protester. “Nobady likes to come on road. It is our last option to seek justice. We want to send a message that we have been pushed to the walls.”

While insisting framing of policy for regularization of their services, the protesters demanded regularization policy for 62000 casual labourers of various departments engaged after 1994 as well as the release of their pending wages.

The protesters said the successive governments have principally agreed to frame a regularization policy and promised to announce a high power committee but “despite announcements, nothing has been done so far”.

For almost a month now, pertinently, the Pratap Park has been housing NYC’s “fast unto death” protest. No breakthrough was achieved even after the state finance minister visited the park twice.
