Jammu: As the process to panchayat election is underway, State Administrative Council (SAC) led by governor Governor, Satya Pal Malik, on Wednesday announced an increase in the ‘honorarium’ for Sarpanchs and Panchs.

Governor Satya Pal Malik chairs SAC meeting on Wednesday, October 31,2018.

The meeting was attended by Advisors, B B Vyas, K Vijay Kumar, Khurshid Ahmed Ganai, and Chief Secretary B V R Subrahmanyam.

To compensate Sarpanchs and Panchs for the onerous responsibilities to be discharged by them under the new Panchayati Raj System being put in place in the state, the SAC decided to pay them honorarium as a token of encouragement, an official spokesman said.

The SAC decided that the Sarpanchs will be paid a monthly honorarium of Rs 2500 and Panchs Rs 1000.

The SAC hoped that the provision would infuse enthusiasm among the elected Panchayat members- the election for which is being held in nine phases, starting from Nov 17, 2018.

The Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) has already announced the notifications for three initial phases. The Panchayat polls follow the Municipal Election that were completed in four phases and witnessed a cold response from Kashmir’s main political parties and the voters.
