Ahead of the joint shutdown call by separatists, authorities on Wednesday placed most of the leaders under house arrest.

Police on Wednesday afternoon arrested chairperson of Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF), Muhammad Yasin Malik while Hurriyat Conference (m) chairperson, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, Media Advisor to Mirwaiz, Shahid-ul-Islam was placed under house arrest in the wee hours early this morning.

Hurriyat Conference (g) chairperson, Syed Ali Geelani and Democratic Freedom Party chief and senior Hurriyat Conference (g) leader, Shabir Ahmad Shah are already under house arrest.

In a statement issued to KNS, JKLF spokesman said that Chairman of Jammu Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF), Muhammad Yasin Malik was arrested by police from his office at Abi Guzar Srinagar.

“Police toady afternoon raided JKLF office at Abi Guzar and arrested Malik. He has been arrested on the occasion of marriage of his cousin sister (sister of Shaheed Yasir Ahmad Sheikh who was martyred in 2010 by police in Maisuma) whose Nikah Khwani was scheduled at 5:00 PM today and has been denied a chance to participate in the marriage ceremony,” JKLF spokesman said.

According to a senior Hurriyat Conference (m) leader, Chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq was placed under house arrest.

He said that Mirwaiz was scheduled to head a meeting he had called to discuss Hurriyat strategy to resist Sainik colonies and Pandit townships in the state.

Shahid-ul-Islam and other party leaders were also arrested, he said.

Meanwhile, president of Anjuman-e-Shair-e-Shia, Aga Syed Hasan Almosvi Alsafvi, was placed under house detention while several other leaders detained by the police.

Pertinently, both the factions of Hurriyat Conference including JKLF called for shutdown on May 26 (Thursday) against the recent controversial issues.

The three leaders forged “issue based unity” on the recent controversial issues and decided to hold joint programmes to counter “RSS’s anti-Kashmir plans”.
