SRINAGAR: In a groundbreaking move, the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) New Delhi, India’s premier central tertiary care hospital, has witnessed a pivotal moment in its 68-year history with the appointment of its first-ever woman Medical Superintendent (MS), Dr Nirupam Madaan.

Originally from Jammu, Dr Nirupam Madaan brings a wealth of experience and expertise to her new role. An alumna of Government Medical College (GMC) Jammu, she further honed her skills by obtaining an MD in Hospital Administration from SKIMS Kashmir. Her journey to the top echelons of AIIMS began with her selection for senior residency at the prestigious institution in New Delhi.

What sets Dr Nirupam apart is not only her professional prowess but also her historic role as the first woman to hold the position of Medical Superintendent in the esteemed institute. Her achievement is not just a personal triumph but a significant milestone for gender equality in the medical field.

Hailing from a lineage of accomplished individuals spanning three generations, Dr Nirupam Madaan’s family has been a cornerstone in the realms of education and technology, contributing significantly to the nation’s development. Before she was appointed Medical Superintendent, Dr Nirupam served as the additional Medical Superintendent of the JPNA Trauma Centre, which played a crucial role as the designated COVID hospital of AIIMS during the challenging times of the pandemic. Her leadership during this period has been widely acknowledged, as she navigated the hospital and its patients through the complexities of the COVID crisis.
