SRINAGAR: Syed Ali Geelani who is unwell for a long time and under house arrest for almost a decade has thrown a surprise by quitting Hurriyat Conference, the amalgam he was heading.

In a letter attached to a short audio message – that is viral on the social media, Geelani has cited the “preset circumstances” as the factor for his resignation. “The decision has been conveyed to all the constituents of Hurriyat through official letters,” the letter says. “After considering the present circumstances, I announce to quit the Hurriyat forum.”

The All-Party Hurriyat Conference had suffered a vertical split. Geelani was heading one faction of Hurriyat and another was led by Mirwaiz Umer Farooq. Now he has quit from his own faction as well. Reports said he has mentioned of non-cooperation, financial bunglings and efforts by representatives of some of the constituents in Muzaffarabad in getting into the local government.
