Kashmir’s international cyclist Akbar Khan Thursday once again made his home district proud by standing first at a cycling event. He plays for Mirza Sons.

A statement issued by Budgam Cycling Association said that Akbar stood first at Check-i-Kawoosa in district Budgam on Thursday in a cycling event organised by Chinar Sports Development Association.

Vice-Chairperson Budgam Sports Council, Rifat Abdullah, flagged off. Ajaz Bashir of J&K bank sponsored the event.

“The race kick started from Chinar Colony Check-i-Kawoosa to Kawoosa Khalisa. The race completed in seven laps where cyclists covered distance of 42 kms,” the statement said.

“Akbar Khan of Mirza Sons defeated his competitors by a margin of 1 km. Akbar khan took lead in fourth lap and later dominated the race. Adil Teli of Arco Cements secured second place while Waheed Ahmad bagged third place in the race.”

“Impact of training received by Akbar Khan at Sports Authority of India Centre New Delhi was visible when he took huge lead of about one Kilometre at the end of the race,” the statement observed.

Large number of locals including women witnessed the competition early in the morning on Srinagar-Gulmarg highway. The organisers appreciated the role of cops of Police Station Magam who regulated traffic very smoothly during the event.

At the concluding ceremony, Rifat Abdullah and Aijaz Bashir distributed prizes among the winners.

Addressing the players and spectators on the occasion, Rifat Abdullah highlighted the importance of sports in day-to-day life of youth. “Kawoosa has become a hub of cycling activities and there is need to promote the sport in the area at a large scale,” he said.

Rifat Abdullah also announced that a mega cycling event would be organised in next two months at Kawoosa during the night under street lights which are already functional on Srinagar-Gulmarg highway from Narbal to Mazhama.

He assured full support to the cyclists from Budgam Sports Council.

The Sponsor of the event, Ajaz Bashir said that the theme of the event (No to Drugs) was very important theme because drug menace is silently destroying the youth and the society.

He appealed the parents to channelize the talent of the children in a proper way and keep them away from social evils.

Meanwhile, in junior category, Pervaiz Ahmad Sheer Gujri of Boys Higher Secondary School bagged the first place while Saqib Sheikh of Toyota Ansari and Monis Ismail of Gazala Memorial school bagged second and third position respectively.
