SRINAGAR: The People Democratic Party (PDP) strongly criticised Apni Party President Altaf Bukhari for his recent remarks concerning the Waqf Board, stating that the Waqf is a sacred institution and belongs to the entire community.

In a statement, PDP spokesperson Rouf Bhat expressed regret over the exploitation of Waqf resources by certain families for personal gain over the years.

“It is evident that Bukhari’s frustration is rooted in his profit-driven mindset, akin to his actions that had adverse effects on the horticulture industry in Kashmir. Nevertheless, it is essential to stress that the Waqf belongs to the collective, transcending any specific family or merchant,” Bhat said.

He further highlighted Mufti Sayeed’s legacy, including the establishment of the Islamic University, Baba Ghulam Shah Badshah University, paramedical colleges for girls, schools, and the provision of monthly assistance to the impoverished and orphaned individuals through Waqf resources.

Bhat noted that presently, Waqf is being politically manipulated, but those who grasp its true purpose understand that it cannot be exploited or its properties sold for personal gain.

“Altaf Bukhari is recognised for promoting crony capitalism and treating institutions as commodities for trade. Individuals who reduce politics to a mere marketplace and attempt to auction people cannot lecture us on matters of faith and religion,” he concluded.
