Srinagar

Authorities on Saturday suspended the Amarnath yatra from Jammu for a day following a shutdown call by joint resistance leadership, an official said.

An official said that in view of a shutdown, no fresh batch of pilgrims was allowed from Yatri Niwas base camp in Jammu on Saturday.

Only pilgrims already in Baltal and Pahalgam will be allowed to move towards the cave shrine, he said.

The shutdown was called to remember those killed in the firing outside the Srinagar Central Jail by forces of the Dogra Maharaja on July 13 1931.

Till date, over 1.50 lakh pilgrims have paid obeisance at the shrine.
