Addressing a conference on “Extradition of Fugitives Challenges and Strategies” organised by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in New Delhi, as per NDTV, Shah said India must adopt a zero-tolerance policy not only towards corruption, crime, and terrorism, but also against those operating from abroad to undermine the country’s security and economy.

“Whether they are economic offenders, cyber criminals, those involved in terrorist activities or organised crime networks, a ruthless approach must be adopted against every fugitive to ensure they are brought before the Indian justice system. The time has come for this,” Shah stated as per NDTV.

He emphasised the need to establish a clear and robust mechanism to bring fugitives under the ambit of Indian law, noting that the Narendra Modi government had implemented “foolproof measures” to prevent offenders from escaping justice.

“Under the leadership of Prime Minister Modi, a strong India is moving forward to ensure not only the security of its borders but also the strengthening of the rule of law,” he said.

Highlighting the need for speedier justice delivery, Shah remarked that “no matter how swift the tactics of crime and criminals, the reach of justice must be even swifter.”

The home minister also urged all states to establish at least one prison facility meeting international standards, to address the concerns raised by fugitives in foreign courts about the condition of Indian jails.

He said such steps would bolster India’s efforts in extradition proceedings and reinforce the credibility of its justice system globally.
