SRINAGAR: Jammu and Kashmir Police on Wednesday issued the following statement regarding Anantnag gunfight saying that on specific input generated by Anantnag Police regarding presence of terrorists in Shalgul, forest area of Srigufwara Anantnag, a joint cordon and search operation was launched by Police and 3RR in the said area.

A police spokesman in a statement said that during the search operation as the presence of militants got ascertained they were given an opportunity to surrender, however, they fired indiscriminately upon the joint search party, which was retaliated leading to an encounter.

He said that in the ensuing encounter, two unidentified militants were killed and their bodies were retrieved from the site of encounter. The identification and affiliation of the killed militantts is being ascertained.

“In case any family claims the killed militants to be their kith or kin, they can come forward for their identification at PCR Kashmir,” said the spokesman.

“Arms & ammunition including 02 AK rifles and other incriminating materials were recovered from the site of encounter. All the recovered materials have been taken into case records for further investigation and to probe their complicity in other  crimes,” said the spokesman.

“In this connection police have registered a case under relevant sections of law and investigation has been initiated. People are requested to cooperate with police till the area is completely sanitized and cleared off of all the explosive materials, if any,” said the spokesman.
