SRINAGAR: The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) is designed to identify researchers and offer them training and research opportunities in diverse fields such as basic science, engineering, medicine, and agriculture. Candidates can apply throughout the year, with selections made in June and December.

This initiative aims to facilitate the transition of fresh PhD holders into independent research careers. CSIR plans to award 100 fellowships annually to eligible candidates for research in CSIR laboratories equipped with state-of-the-art R and D facilities.

To be eligible for the fellowship, applicants must hold a PhD degree awarded within the last three years or have submitted their PhD theses. Those about to submit their theses are also eligible, subject to timely submission. Candidates should have research publications in high-impact factor SCI journals. While the fellowship primarily targets Indian nationals, a portion (up to 20 per cent) may be awarded to foreign nationals.

The maximum age limit is 32 years, extendable in specific cases (SC/ST/Physically handicapped, women: up to five years; OBC: up to three years). The fellowship duration is two years, extendable for one more year based on outstanding performance and lab director’s recommendation.

CSIR Nehru Science Postdoctoral Fellows will receive a consolidated fellowship of INR 65,000 per month, along with HRA and a contingency grant of INR 3.0 lakh per annum. A portion of the grant can be utilized for domestic and international travel. Accommodation may be provided, and fellows are entitled to medical benefits. Rules for leased accommodation are under review.

The application review includes shortlisting based on the proposed research project and an interview. Employed candidates from outside CSIR need the director’s recommendation and an undertaking from their organization. Selected candidates must join within four months of the award’s effective date.
