While taking strong notice of the harassment of a senior Tehreek-e-Hurriyat official in frontier district of Kupwara and taking photographs of him by the army, Hurriyat Conference (g) Saturday cautioned that the “attitude of the army is very ambiguous and suspicious which has created concerns about the safety of the Tehreek-e-Hurriyat officials.”

In a statement, Hurriyat (g) said that they have decided to bring this issue to the notice of the human rights organizations and have started to gather the information and “real aim of the army” behind this incident.

“Army personnel of the Kralpora Kupwara camp from a very long time call a prominent pro-freedom leader of the area and Tehreek-e-Hurriyat district president Kupwara Mohammad Yousuf Lone to the camp. The army sometimes makes call to his personal phone number and sometimes come to his shop and tell him to come to the camp but Lone Sahab every time answers them that he is a political worker and his all activities are open to the public so there is no reason for him to visit the army camp and army has no jurisdiction to call any political worker or activist to the camp,” the Hurriyat (g) statement said.

“An army Major of the said camp along with his subordinates raided the house of the pro-freedom leader on 24 July night which frightened his family members. On the occasion the said army officer interrogated Lone Sahab for about an hour and forced him to answer some unrelated questions. The army not only prepared an IR of the Hurriyat leader but they also clicked some photographs of him. When asked about this interrogation of a political person, the army officer failed to give any satisfactory reply and he showed some ambiguous and suspicious gestures which have concerned the family members of Lone Sahab,” he added.

While strongly condemning this action of the army, Hurriyat (g) expressed apprehension that army wants to harm the Tehreek-e-Hurriyat leader and they want to threaten him by these actions so that he will suspend his political activities in the area.

“Hurriyat has come to know that Mohammad Yousuf Lone is being harassed on the behest of a particular pro-Indian political party and they have given all the information about him to the army. The pro-Indian person actually does not tolerate the existence of any pro-freedom person in the frontier district of Kupwara and they treat them as a major hurdle in the implementation of their wicked and evil designs. Hurriyat has decided to bring this army action into the notice of the human rights organizations and cautioned that if anything untoward happened with its leader, it will have serious consequences and its responsibility will be on the army, district administration and a particular pro-Indian political party,” the Hurriyat amalgam added.
