An army man was killed in an “encounter” near Line of Control (LoC) in Keran sector of north Kashmir’s Kupwara district on Friday.

Reports said that Army’s 21 KAMAW guarding the Gujer Dori area near LoC in the sector detected some suspicious movement during wee hours on today. When the forces challenged the infiltrators, they started firing ensuing fierce gun battle in which an army man, Sepoy Ramesh Chand Yadav.

Srinagar based defence ministry official, while confirming the incident said that an army man sustained serious bullet injuries in a gunfight with infiltrators in near LoC while foiling an infiltration bid. The gunfight triggered after the alert men noticed suspicious movement and challenged the group of infiltrators trying to sneak inside, the official said.

The injured army personnel was immediately airlifted to army’s 92 base hospital for treatment, however, he succumbed to injuries, the official said.

The search operation in the area is still going on.
