Khan, a member of the 12th Jammu and Kashmir Light Infantry, is remembered as one of the gallant soldiers who gave his life for the nation during the 1999 Kargil War. On June 7, 1999, during a fierce assault on Point 5203 in the Batalik Sector, he played a pivotal role in thwarting an enemy advance. According to Army records, at 0430 hours, he detected approximately 20 enemy combatants moving towards his position and quickly neutralised three with his rocket launcher. Despite the loss of eight comrades and being outgunned, Lance Naik Khan continued to hold his ground and was ultimately martyred after sustaining multiple gunshot wounds. His courage and leadership were recognised with the Vir Chakra, one of India’s highest gallantry awards.

As part of the commemoration, Khan’s family received a memento and a letter of gratitude from the Army, acknowledging his heroism and unwavering commitment to the country. Tributes poured in from various quarters, with villagers and fellow soldiers recalling his patriotism, discipline, and dedication to duty.

The Kargil Vijay Diwas tributes serve to highlight the enduring legacy of Lance Naik Ghulam Mohammad Khan. Army officials stated that his name remains etched in India’s military history as an inspiration to future generations, reflecting the sacrifices made by soldiers from Jammu and Kashmir and across the country.
