Army saved precious lives of nine passengers trapped in an avalanche at Nasta Chun pass, in Frontier district of Kupwara, an army statement said.

“On 20 Apr 14, at about 1620h, nine passengers, including women and children travelling from Tangdhar to Kupwara were trapped under ten feet of snow when the vehicle they were travelling   in, was struck by a torrential Avalanche,” the statement said, adding, “Army Avalanche rescue team located at the Nasta Chun Pass immediately sprung into action and started rescue operation to save the lives of trapped passengers. Within 15 minutes the team was able to successfully dig out all nine passengers.”

The statement further said that these passengers were then taken to the Nasta Chun Pass and were provided with medical help, hot beverages and food.

“This has been the third rescue operation being undertaken by the brave troopers in a spell of six days,” it added.

Meanwhile, the army said that its troops along with civil administration averted a major fire tragedy in North Kashmir’s Kupwara town and saved precious lives and property worth lakhs of rupees.

“On 20 April 14 at 0800h, a major fire broke out at Sunrise Sweet shop located in heart of Kupwara town. The shop belonged to Ghulam Ahmed Mir of Kupwara. Locals approached nearby Army camp for help. The Army authority responded promptly and a fire fighting team was immediately dispatched to the incident site. Civil authorities also pressed in their Fire Tenders. After an hour of hard work, the fire was doused down,” it said.

The statement added, “no loss of life was reported, however, the kitchen of the shop was burnt completely. The prompt actions by the army fire fighting team and civil authorities for providing fire fighting assistance were appreciated by the shop owner as well as by the locals.”
