The army on Wednesday said its soldiers rescued many and helped evacuate two women in labour.

In two separate incidents, the defence spokesman said rescue teams of army subunits located at Imamsahib and Hathipura in general area Behibagh falling in Shopian district, evacuated two pregnant ladies on stretchers by walking incessantly for approximately 3 hrs. One of the pregnant ladies delivered a healthy child while second one awaits her bundle of joy.

Giving details about its contribution in Balsaren rescue, the spokesman said after they received the information, a rescue team of an RR Unit was immediately rushed to the spot. The team braving the inclement weather reached the spot with great difficulty.

“After a lot of physical and mental effort, the team managed to extricate and saved precious lives of 07 civilians,” the spokesman said. “However before the team could reach, 03 persons had unfortunately already died who were identified as Rashid, age 25 yrs, Bilal, age 14 yrs and Talib, age 12 yrs.” He said at least two dozen livestock are missing, presumably buried under the snow, many houses were also damaged.
