SRINAGAR: An Army soldier died after his service rifle accidentally discharged while he was on operational duty at a forward post in the Akhnoor sector of Jammu, officials said on Monday.
The incident took place on Sunday in the forward Jogwan area of Khour, where the soldier was deployed on duty, officials said.
Preliminary findings indicate that the soldier’s service weapon discharged accidentally, leaving him critically injured.
The injured soldier was immediately provided medical assistance but later succumbed to his injuries, officials said.
The body was shifted to the Military Hospital in Akhnoor for post-mortem examination. It will be handed over to the soldier’s next of kin after completion of the required legal formalities, officials added.
The circumstances surrounding the accidental discharge are being examined, officials said.
