Protests erupted in Zainapora area of Shopian District following the killing of a nine year old girl in a road traffic accident involving army vehicle in Aglar village on Thursday morning.

Aglar is a village close to Zainpora, a Tehsil headquarter.

According to local sources, people poured in on roads and chanted slogans against army. The police rushed to the spot to deal with the protests. “They (the police) fired teargas shells to disperse the protesters,” sources said.

When the minor girl was hit by the army vehicle she died on spot but the army men picked her up and carried her to the nearby hospital, sources said. “However, there they faced the protests from general public and they fled from hospital.”

Officials at Police station Zainapora informed Kashmir Life that the offending army vehicle belonged to Rashtriya Rifles, a major army formation deployed on counter-insurgency operations. The police officials said that there is confusion about the name of the deceased and they are waiting for confirmation. However, local sources said that the deceased has been identified as Zeeshan.
