SRINAGAR: A number of people have reportedly been detained as different law enforcement agencies have sped up investigations into various militancy-related cases after the recent spate of killings. Around 40 teachers have been summoned by the federal investigator, National Investigating Agency (NIA), reports added.
Reports appearing in media suggested that NIA has raided almost 16 locations across Kashmir and right now they are busy in raids at nine spots.
“Several stone pelters and anti-India elements have been detained and are being questioned,” premier news agency PTI reported, quoting the NIA sources. “As many as 70 youths have been detained in Srinagar and a total of 570 people have been detained across Kashmir in the past 2-3 days. The crackdown by security forces took place just after the terror attacks on minorities three days ago.”
The ongoing raids, reports said are in relation with The Resistance Front (TRF) case. The shadowy outfit had staked claims for various recent attacks.
Global news gatherer, Reuters, however, termed the number of detained people at 300. “Over 300 people were detained for questioning across Kashmir during the last two days,” the news agency quoted one anonymous police official saying. “Those detained included members of the banned religious organisation Jamaat-e-Islami, an umbrella alliance of secessionists known as the Hurriyat Conference, and others with previous links to militant groups, added the official.”
Another news gatherer, IANS put the number of detained at 400. “The J&K Police have already detained over 400 people in connection with the FIRs lodged in different police stations pertaining to the civilian killings in the Valley,” the news agency reported. “Top sources said the detained people have known links with the proscribed Jamaat-e-Islami, Tehreek-e-Hurriyat and others with known terror links in the past.”
Offering more details, the IANS said that the NIA has taken over the investigation into the murders of principal Supinder Kour and teacher Deepak Chand, who were killed on duty in the Eidgah area of Srinagar city. “The 40 teachers summoned by the NIA at 4 p.m. on Sunday at its Church Lane office in Srinagar belong to various schools in Srinagar city.”
These teachers are from different schools. “They are one each from Boys Middle School (BMS) Khoja Bagh, Middle School (MS) Khimber, BMS Peth Batpora, BMS Fisherman Colony, Boys Primary School (BPS) Shoor, BMS Handom Mohalla, MS Gnaia Mohalla Gulab Bagh, MPs Gasoo, BMS Doji Mohalla, Girls Higher Secondary School (GHSS) Shalimar, BHS Baghe Dedmari, BHS Zoonimar, GMS Nadiyar, Primary School (PS) Gandabal, PS Herpora Soiteng, BMS Soiteng, GMS Basant Bagh, BMS Athwajan and BMS Rajbagh; two each from BMS Dara Faqir Gujri, BMS Burzahama and 3 from Boys Higher Secondary School (BHSS) Nawa Kadal, GHSS Nawa Kadal, BHSS Sangam, BHS Bakhshipora, BHS Takunwaripora and Boys Higher Secondary School (BHSS) Palpora,” Jammu based newspaper Daily Excelsior reported. “These teachers have been asked to liaise with DySP NIA Prabhat Bajpai. They were directed to report at the NIA Camp Office in Church Lane Srinagar today at 4 pm as they are required by the agency on 10th and 11th October in connection with investigation of NIA case.”
Kashmir witnessed the killing of six people in two days, which included two Kashmiri Pandits, a Sikh and a non-local street vendor, also a non-Muslim.
