Normal business resumed on day 19 of the 2016-17 budget session of J&K Legislature.

The current session started on May 25, 2016 with J&K Governor N N Vohra’s address to both houses of the legislature in the Banquet Hall of SKICC because of lack of space to accommodate lawmakers from upper and lower houses in the new legislative complex near secretariat.

The PDP-BJP government presented its budget on May 31 by economist turned lawmaker, Dr Haseeb A Drabu. Since then, the houses are discussing budget of over Rs 62000 crore to be spent in nine months of current fiscal. The houses are debating grants given to different department.

As soon as the business resumed Wednesday morning, right wing BJP lawmakers demanded that Lower House should condemn the alleged desecration of a temple in Jammu region.

While BJP’s Ravinder Raina raised the issue and said that “how the desecration of the temple happened”, he was interrupted by National Conference lawmakers. “Muslims are being targeted in Jammu region,” NC legislators told the house.

Observing that CM and Dy CM are absent in the house, Leader of Opposition and former CM, Omar Abdullah said, “maintaining calm in this august house will send a positive message to people in Jammu are facing tense situation.”

He said that such “acts” should be condemned unanimously.

Government represented by PDP Minister Ab Haq Khan said that “one youth who was a lunatic had entered the temple and done the alleged act” in Janipur area of Jammu region.

Meanwhile, as the Question resumed functioning normally, Speaker Kavinder Gupta disallowed MLA Tral to pronounce his supplementary. Lawmaker from ruling PDP Mushtaq Ahmad walked into the Well to press fro his demand. This invited “sarcastic” thumping of benches from Opposition benches to him.
