Ruling party lawmakers Saturday exhibited fault-lines in the assembly when the house was discussing the National Food Security Act. NC leader Ali Mohammad Sagar had made Food Minister Choudhary Zulfikar Ali’s position precarious by raising important issues.

As Choudhary was responding, PDP MLA Mohammad Ashraf Mir intervened. The angry lawmaker wanted to know how the minister had deleted certain ration cards from his constituency arbitrarily. He wanted a quick response to that.

From the other corner of the house, it was apparently Yawar Mir who came to the support of Ashraf. His Rafiabad constituency was the latest wherefrom the protests against the unfair rationing were reported. “If you have deleted people having 80 kanals of land what about those owning 75 kanals,” Yawar asked.

Responding to Ashraf Mir’s intervention, Food Minister quipped: “Bolnay Dou, In Ki Ministry Jaldi Gayi Na”. (Let him speak, he has lost his ministry quite recently).

As NC benches resorted to table thumping, PDP’s Javed Mir and Altaf Bukhari were on their legs aghast at the minister. Angry but confidant Ashraf retorted: “Yeh Ministry Aaap Kay Baap Ki Jager Nahin Hai.” (This ministry does not belong to your father.”

Yawar, sitting a few benches away, reacted: “If this flawed Food Act is implemented on ground, everybody will be like Ashraf Mir.”

As Ashraf Mir and Choudhary were squabbling to the delight of opposition benches, Rural Development Minister Abdul Haq Khan got up and calmed them down.

Interestingly, Choudhary drew flak from all parties. NC, BJP and Congress registered their concern over the flawed distribution of the rations. “Ashraf Mir and Yawar Mir are right,” shouted BJPs Ramban MLA. “Come to Ramban and see the mess the NFSA has created.”
