A top rank militant from Hizbul Mujhadeen lost his life during a brief gun fight between him and Government forces in North Kashmir’s Tangmarg area of Baramulla district on Wednesday morning.

The slain militant Nisar Ali Wani, a resident of Aatipora Kunzar according to locals was a Hafiz (Quran) and was a top rank militant commander active from past one and a half years.

“We had information about the presence of Nisar in Bongam Kunzar area. Army personnel from 2 RR cordoned off the area. Nisar tried to break the cordon and when he reached near Bongam Arah, he was shot by Army men. Nisar before succumbing to injuries retaliated and injured three Army personnel. The three army personnel Gurdas Singh, Sukhdev Singh and Dashpat received minor injuries,” a police official told CNS.

Nisar Wani according to police official was a close associate of South Kashmir based Hizb commander Burhan Wani. “Nisar was active in North Kashmir and was responsible for the recruitment of new youth into militancy. He was also a close associate of Fayaz Ahmed of Wailo Pattan whose body was recently recovered from the paddy fields in Goshbugh Tangmarag,” he said.

The Police Official who wished not to be named said that Nisar was responsible for killing an SOG cop and an Army man at Hardshora Tangmarg in April this year. “On April 3, 2015, Nisar managed to break the cordon after he killed a soldier Jagdesh Kumar of Uttar Pradesh and the SOG man Muhammad Shafi (Belt number 142) of Chenabal Pattan. Another soldier Mandeep Kumar was also injured during that encounter,” he said.

Meanwhile, the native village of Hizb militant Nisar Ahmed witnessed massive protests after the news about his killing spread in the area. Scores of youth took to streets and raised pro-freedom slogans. Large contingent of police and Para-military Central Reserve Police Force personnel had been deployed to maintain law and order in the area.
