To give a fillip to the fisheries sector in the valley, Fisheries Department  today held an awareness cum training programme for farmers associated with fish rearing here at Akkad, Islamabad.

Mohammad Younis Malik, Additional District Development Commissioner Anantnag was the chief guest on the occasion.

Progressive fish  farmers from many parts of the district participated in the training programme and were sensitized about the newly launched schemes by the state and central government for promotion of private carp and trout farms.

The ADC said that given the district’s abundant natural water resources, its controlled exploitation will greatly help to promote private fish and carp culture in the region.

During the awareness programme, importance regarding the scope of the fish-production and rearing of fingerlings under induced natural conditions were highlighted particularly regarding rearing of trout.

For better harvests, basic techniques of fish and carp culture like Cleaning, grading and feeding which fish farmers need to adopt were also demonstrated.

The experts also stressed for adoption of sustainable and scientific technology for better production in the district   during the peak season.

The farmers also highlighted their achievements and informed that they can earn Rs 15000 per month if   better marketing facilities are available for the produce in the district.

A number of demands were put forth before ADDC like establishment of feed mill at Anantnag, covering nets for fingerlings, district level sale centre, the revival of non-functional farms, availability of medicines, feed analysis laboratory at the district level for which he assured that most of the demands would be met during the current year.

Assistant Director Fisheries said that under the convergence with MGNERGS, 26 ponds have been constructed at an estimated cost of Rs 83 lakh in the district. He said that a marketing outlet shall soon be made functional at Ashajipora, Anantnag for the conveyance of consumers.
