Union Health Minister, Ghulam Nabi Azad inaugurated the National Research Institute of Sowa Rigpa in Leh on Tuesday. After the upgradation of this Centre as National Research Institute in 2009, infrastructure upgradation was taken up in this new complex by spending more than Rs 1.50 crore.Azad-17

As per a statement Minister for Urban Development, Nawang Rigzin Jora in his speech highlighted the role of Amchis in public health in Ladakh and to make it more systematic on modern lines with proper degree and certification. The Minister put forth a demand to open a college in Ladakh for appropriate study of Buddhist medical system.  On behalf of the people of Ladakh, Jora extended gratitude to Azad for his wholehearted support in granting recognition to Sowa Rigpa in Indian Medical System.

Responding to the demands put forth by  Jora, Azad said, “Sowa Rigpa committee in Central Council of Indian Medicine is being constituted that will look into the issues of curriculum and education of Amchi system.” He also assured to find a way out to establish a college for Sowa Rigpa in Ladakh in view of its immense role in public health.

The Union Minister also appreciated people of Ladakh for preservation of age old manuscripts of Buddhist medicines system and its practices even today despite the advancement of allopathic system of medicine, reads the statement.

The CEC, Rigzin Spalbar, Executive Councilors, Councilors, dignitaries, DC, Leh, SP Leh and some 50 Amchis representing various regions also attended the inaugural function.
