SRINAGAR: The region of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh experienced a series of five mild-intensity earthquakes within a span of 24 hours, with the highest magnitude recorded at 4.5. The initial tremor occurred at 2:03 pm on Saturday, following a 3.0 magnitude earthquake in Jammu and Kashmir.

Multiple low-intensity earthquakes were reported in the Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh region, as confirmed by the National Center for Seismology (NCS).

According to an official from the meteorological department who spoke to The Hindustan Times, the epicentre of the 3.0 magnitude tremor was in the hilly Ramban district along the Jammu-Srinagar national highway. This earthquake had a depth of five kilometres below the surface, with a latitude of 33.31 degrees north and a longitude of 75.19 degrees east.

The second tremor, measuring 4.5 in magnitude, struck 271 km northeast of Leh in Ladakh at approximately 9:44 pm. Shortly after, at 9:55 pm, the Doda district in Jammu and Kashmir experienced a 4.4-magnitude earthquake, just 15 minutes after the quake near the India-China border. It was the seventh earthquake in the Doda district within the past five days.

The National Center for Seismology tweeted the details of the Doda earthquake: “Earthquake of Magnitude: 4.4, Occurred on 17-06-2023, 21:55:39 IST, Lat: 33.04 & Long: 75.70, Depth: 18 Km, Location: Doda, Jammu and Kashmir.”

During the early hours of Sunday, another earthquake measuring 4.1 in magnitude jolted the region. Its epicentre was located near the India-China border, 295 km northeast of the Leh district in Ladakh.

The final seismic event was observed near Katra in Jammu and Kashmir. At 3:50 am, an earthquake with a magnitude of 4.1 struck 80 km east of Katra, reaching a depth of 11 km.

The NCS provided further details regarding the Katra earthquake in a tweet: “Earthquake of Magnitude: 4.1, Occurred on 18-06-2023, 03:50:29 IST, Lat: 32.96 & Long: 75.79, Depth: 11 Km, Location: 80 km East of Katra, Jammu and Kashmir, India.”
