Demanding a thorough probe into what he called a fishy firing incident allegedly by one of the constables from his security escort resulting into injuries to two people at Bandipore, Nizam-u-Din Bhat, PDP senior leader and MLA Bandipore on Thursday wrote to police authorities urging them to withdraw his security cover including that of his house guards.

Talking to a local news agency, KNS, Bhat expressed serious concern over the condition of the two people of his constituency who were injured in the firing incident. “Thank God one has already been relieved from the hospital and the condition of second is said to be stable. The incident is fishy and needs to be probed thoroughly,” Bhat said.

He added that the incident for him is a serious matter which not end here but should be investigated and the culprits be brought to book. Asked to explain about the alleged involvement of his Personal Security Officer (PSO) into the firing incident, the MLA Bandipore said that it seems a baseless campaign has been unleashed against him with ulterior political motives.

“This is why I have written to the police authorities to withdraw my security cover. The silence maintained by the police authorities on two glaring facts which otherwise should have been clarified by it, is criminal.”

Bhat told KNS that it was the duty of the police authorities to clarify that the constable who is said to be involved in the incident was not my PSO and belonged to police escort whose duty ends naturally at the time when his movement stops in the constituency.

“The escort is supposed to report back to their police lines when my movement ends in the constituency. Besides, that I was in Jammu since November 10 and I boarded the flight number 821 where I attended the estimate committee meeting on November 12. My return ticket was confirmed for November 14 and I was back to valley today. During this time, I didn’t need any escort. So isn’t it a politically motivated and malicious campaign against me,” Bhat informed KNS.

He said that it is in this context that he has shot a letter to SSP security and copies to SP Bandipora that his security cover be withdrawn immediately given that fact, “We are unnecessarily made accountable on the conduct of those on whom we don’t have any administrative control.”

However, Usman Majeed senior Congress leader and former minister while talking to KNS said, “The firing incident is politically motivated. The constable who fired on two innocent people is working as PSO of Nizam-u-Din Bhat for the last four years. Besides that the father of Altaf Baba (constable allegedly involved in the firing incident) is a close associate of Bhat. One of the victim in this firing incident is the district youth congress secretary Bandipore. Bhat has tried to do these tricks earlier to intimidate him but this time his PSO tried to kill him. This is not how you can win elections,” Majeed told KNS.

He said that political differences apart, but using arms to fight elections is not ethical. “Why should I be blamed for that or why should I do it against an MLA who has lost ground in his constituency Bandipore.”

Meanwhile the SSP Bandipora Bashir Ahmad Khan when contacted by KNS said that the police has initiated investigations into the matter. He further informed that the FIR has been registered against the police personal Altaf Baba, allegedly involved in the firing incident.

However, sources revealed to KNS that Baba has been taken into the police custody and has been booked under FIR number 244 under section 307 of RPC (Attempt to murder) and under 7/25 (arms act).
