In an effort to provide necessary legal assistance to detenues languishing in various jails of the state, the Jammu and Kashmir High Court Bar Association has constituted a team to visit different jails including the Tihar Jail in Delhi. The 16 member team is being headed by JKHCBA president Z A Qureshi and would also include the former president of the association Mian Abdul Qayoom.

According to a statement issued by the bar, “the permission for visiting the jails had been sought by the Bar Association on December 28, 2012 from the Hon’ble High Court in O.W.P. No. 767/2007.” “The aim of the visit will be to provide necessary legal aid and assistance to the detenues and under trial prisoners of Jammu and Kashmir lodged in these jails,” the statement added.

Apart from various lawyers of repute, the vice president, present and former general secretaries of the Bar Association are also a part of the team.

The Bar Association has also taken a serious note of imposing unnecessary curfew in Pulwama district by the state administration. “The people of Pulwama are facing shortage of food, medical aid and other necessities of the life”, the statement said.

The Bar Association has taken up the matter with Amnesty International and other International Human Rights Organizations with regard to giving free license to the Army as well as the security forces to kill innocent Kashmiris without there being any justification, it added.

The Bar Association has also condemned the administration for not maing any arrest of any army or security personnel who allegedly showered bullets on the innocent people including the ambulance carrying the injured people to the hospital.
