Affected families of landslide hit Lateefabad village, in Kandi area in Baramulla district have been left in lurch as government has failed to compensate them since March 2016.

The affected families are living with their acquaintances, while some are still putting up at a local Panchayat Ghar amid harsh winter.

“We were promised that compensation for the fully damaged houses will be released within one month, however, eleven months have passed and we have not received a single penny due to which affected families are facing immense hardships,” said Abdul Qadeer Beig, whose residential house was completely damaged after landslides hit it.

When contacted Deputy Commissioner Baramulla, Dr Nasir Ahmad Naqash, said, “We have not received any compensation amount from the SDRF despite many communications. However, we hope that we will receive the amount soon.”

“We have already prepared compensation details which is more than Rs 11 lakhs. The SDRF is likely to release the amount soon. The matter has been already discussed with them,” the Deputy Commissioner added.

Pertinently, uninterrupted rain during March last year, damaged several residential houses. Seven such houses were completely damaged. District authorities provided affected families Rs 5000 through Red Cross and assured them that due compensation for the fully damaged houses would be reimbursed soon but they have failed to keep up their promise.
