A Special Operations Group policeman was killed and three, including a policeman and two CRPF personnel, were injured in a gunfight at Deyarwani area of Batamalo in Srinagar district on Sunday.

Reports said that a joint team of Police and CRPF cordoned off Deyarwni area of Batamaloo late last night.

A senior police officer said that the cordon was launched in the area following specific inputs about the presence of the militants.

While the cordon was laid around the targeted house the hiding militants fired upon government forces triggering off an encounter, he said.

The officer said that a SOG man was killed and one policeman and two CRPF personnel suffered injuries in the initial gunfire.

The slain policeman was identified as selection grade constable Parvaiz Ahmad son of Mohammad Abbas, a resident of village Dandote Tehsil Budhal District Rajouri.

Reports said that the militants managed to escape from the spot after exchanging fire with the forces.

The owner of the house Neyaz Ahmad Bhat also received injuries during the “exchange of gunfight”, said an official.

He was shifted to SMHS hospital where his condition is said to be stable, he said.

DGP SP Vaid taking to social networking site Twitter wrote: “On a specific information about the presence of militants in a hideout, an operation was launched  in Batmaloo Srinagar leading to exchange of fire, one SOG  boy killed, one JKP & 2 CRPF Jawans sustained injuries, operation continues.”
