Following the continuous shutdown in the Pir Panjal based Baba Ghulam Shah Budshah University (BGSBU), the university authorities on Tuesday evening ordered closure of the varsity sine die.

According to a notification issued by BGSBU Registrar, the students / boarders have been asked to vacate hostels while administrative and essential services shall remain open.

Students have been demanding redressal of their demands including fee hike, hostel and other facilities. Off late a scholarship scam surfaced in the varsity the money of which was meant for the deserving students but was swindled allegedly by some higher up official in hand in glove with a bank clerk.

It is for the consecutive fifteenth day that students were off from classes and holding protest demonstrations in the varsity campus. Following CM office’s intervention, the university ordered transfer of its Registrar to Vice Chancellor’s office as OSD.

Students who were on way to home, while speaking to Kashmir Life, said, “we were asked by officials Tuesday evening to vacate the hostels forthwith or we would be forced out.” “The university officials took cue from what Kashmir University did when it had ordered closure of the hostels and classrooms work following protests against the arrest of a student there.”

The students also claimed that “local support to transferred Registrar” forced closure of the varsity. “Apprehension of gunda raj by locals who are very close to Registrar forced closure of the varsity; the university officials feared some uneven may happen and they closed the varsity,” the students who left the BGSBU campus early this morning said. The students further said that Dean of Engineering department assured “security to students while leaving for their homes. “He told us to leave in groups and said that he will be giving us police protection as well.”

“Consequent upon recent students unrest in the campus and its wider implications and for prevailing peace and tranquillity in the campus,” the varsity order reads, adding, “in exercise of the powers vested with the VC under statue 35 of the university act, all teaching departments including college of engineering and technology, centre of bio diversity, studies and polytechnic are closed with immediate effect till further orders.”

When contacted, the examination controller of BGSBU, Muhammad Ishaq, who has been assigned job of Registrarship in addition told Kashmir Life over phone from Rajouri that the demands of the students have been met with. “Every demand of the students has been met but they are still on agitation mood and that is why we closed university,” he said. “No, there has been no outside force in closing the varsity,” he replied when asked about the students’ assertions. “A separate notification will be published asking students to resume classwork activities.
