SRINAGAR: BJP leader Professor Chaman Lal Gupta passed away on Tuesday at his Jammu residence after being discharged from Narayana Hospital, in Katra. He was 86.

Gupta first became Minister when BJP Government assumed charge under former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. Gupta was  India’s Defence Minister for two years till 2004. He earlier held junior minister’s positions in the Government of India.

Before going to the council of ministers at the centre, Gupta was a lawmaker in Jammu and Kashmir assembly for many terms.

Born in 1934 in Jammu, he did his MSc from G.M. College Jammu and Allahabad University.

Ashok Koul of the BJP has said that Gupta had tested positive for Covid19 following which he was admitted to the Katra Hospital. After he recovered, he was discharged and he breathed his last at his Jamm home. Gupta is survived by two sons and a daughter. His doctor son is living overseas.
