A Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and Vice District President of Anantnag district was shot dead by suspected militants at Verinag area of south Kashmir’s Anantnag district on Saturday.

Reports said that the gunmen believed to be militants fired upon the man identified as Gul Mohammad Mir (60) alias Attal son of Abdul Karim Mir at Nowgam area of Verinag at around 10:00 pm. In the incident, Gul received critical bullet wounds in his chest and abdomen.

BJP senior leader and former MLC Sofi Yousuf confirmed the news agency GNS and said that Gul Mohammad was District Vice President of BJP for Anantnag, and had unsuccessfully contested assembly elections for Dooru assembly segment in 2008 and 2014.

A senior doctor said that Gul received five bullet wounds, three in chest and two in the abdomen. He was declared brought dead at the arrival.

Meanwhile, police in a statement said that Militants on Saturday evening fired on an individual near Nowgam area of Verinag in  District Anantnag. Identified as Gul Mohammad Mir, a resident of Nowgam Verinag, he sustained critical gunshot injuries in the “terror” incident and was evacuated to a hospital for medical treatment where he has reportedly succumbed.

Police have registered a case. Further details on the incident are awaited and police are investigating the circumstances of the crime.
