SRINAGAR: Leader of Opposition Sunil Sharma on Thursday staged a walkout from the Jammu Kashmir Assembly, accusing the government of showing a lack of seriousness towards the plight of flood victims across the Union Territory.

During the proceedings, Sharma said the government had failed to hold a promised discussion on a resolution concerning flood-affected people. “We were assured that the House would take up the issue of flood victims, but the discussion never happened. The government has displayed utter indifference to their suffering, which is why we are walking out,” he said.

He added that thousands of flood-hit residents had been waiting for a clear response on relief and rehabilitation measures but were left disheartened by the government’s silence. An adjournment motion moved by an opposition member to highlight the issue was also rejected, he noted.

“The people expected compassion and action, but their hopes have been ignored. If the government cannot show seriousness towards flood victims, there is no reason for us to remain in the House,” Sharma declared before leaving the Assembly.
