SRINAGAR: It was a horrible scene. A middle-aged woman caught hold of a young boy and started beating him on Residency Road as pedestrians stopped to watch the scene.

Ulfat Mir of Maisuma was summoned by police for publicly beating a young boy near Partap Park (September 2022)

The language she used and the public marshalling she resorted to was captured by somebody on the cell phone and put on social media. It emerged as a viral number.

The video shows the lady’s daughter pleading with her to leave the boy, a request she is turning down. Not much is known about what happened to the boy, who he was and, if at all, did the police act quickly.

After the video clip went viral, the police acted. Seemingly, they have summoned the lady and made the investigations.

Police tweeted: “One lady Ulfat Mir W/o Faisal Mir of Maisuma examined in connection with assaulting a boy in Partap park. She was falsely suspecting him of stalking her daughter. One video went viral about this. She will be produced before magistrate for good behaviour bond under sec 107 of CrPC.”

It was after some time of the lady being summoned by the police that she has released a brief video explaining her behaviour. She said she had issues with her husband and had gone with her daughter to sit in Partap Park where a boy misbehaved with her daughter. “First time, I thought it was a mistake but when it happened the second time, I caught him,” she is heard saying on the video. She alleges that while the man who captured the video has recorded her encounter with the boy but has not seen the boy’s behaviour earlier.

While the video clip has triggered a huge reaction on the social media, the police have asked people not to take law into their own hands.
