Panic gripped Gund village of Kangan area of Ganderbal district after breach in the local power canal due to landslide which flooded whole village damaging dozens of residential houses.

According to a local news gathering agency, at least 12 houses were damaged while two of them collapsed completely in New Colony Gund village of Kangan in North Kashmir on Tuesday night when due a landslide, breech in the local power canal flooded the village.

“Eyewitnesses said that people left their houses amid chaos and ran for cover. The water level in the village started increasing soon after the breech in the canal while no government official came for the rescue of the villagers,” the reports said.

Locals alleged that the MLA concerned did not respond to their repeated phone calls and they spent whole night in open air.

The residents were scared after they witnessed two houses collapsing within no time. At least 12 houses were damaged due to the flood.

The houses of Abdul Qadir Lone, Ghulam Muhammad Lone, Abdul Gani Lone, Ghulam Muhammad Raina, Abdul Hamid Lone, Ghulam Ahmed Kumar, Shamsudin and Bashir Ahmed Raina were completely damaged due to flood like situation that arose due to breech in power canal.

Early Wednesday, Deputy Commissioner Ganderbal Sarmad Hafeez visited the area to take stock of the situation. Locals expressed gratitude to the DC for providing in time ex-gratia to the victims. Eyewitnesses said that people staged a massive protest against Power Development Department and alleged that despite spending crores over the maintenance of the power canal, such incidents occur repeatedly in the area.
