Acknowledging the fact that journalists from last 26 years are working in difficult conditions, government plans to set up Journalist Welfare Fund. This was stated by Dr Haseeb Drabu in his budget speech.

He said that there is no welfare scheme for scribes and announced to have fund with initial corpus of Rs 2 crore.

He while elaborating the essence of the fund said that this will provide support to family in event of untimely death of a working or accredited journalist or in case a journalist is rendered incapacitated.

He suggested the media fraternity to “get together and set up a society, frame the rules and guidelines for administering this fund.”
