Bukhari Questions Disparity: Why Allow Sanjay Singh Oath but Not Engineer Rashid?

SRINAGAR: Jammu and Kashmir Apni Party chief Altaf Bukhari stated on Sunday that while Aam Aadmi Party’s Sanjay Singh was released earlier this year to take oath as a Rajya Sabha member, Engineer Rashid, despite receiving significant public support, has not yet been granted relief to take the oath as a Member of Parliament.

“Why the disparity in treatment of two public representatives? Aam Aadmi Party’s Sanjay Singh was released earlier this year to take oath as Rajya Sabha member and #ErRashid, despite getting a huge public mandate, isn’t being given any relief so far to take the oath as Member Parliament,” he said.

“When will this step-motherly treatment to Kashmiris be over and New Delhi start treating people of J&K at par with the rest of the country? Leaving it to the conscience of GoI to see the different approaches when it comes to matters pertaining to Jammu and Kashmir,” the Bukhari said in a post on ‘X’

On Saturday, Delhi Court postponed hearing of  Engineer Rashid’s interim bail plea until July 1 for taking oath. The Court deferred the hearing after National Investigation Agency (NIA) sought more time to tender its response.

Earlier also the Court deferred the final verdict on the plea of Rashid for granting interim bail for taking oath as Member of Parliament on multiple occasions and te lastest one was on June 19, 2014.

Rashid recently emerged victorious over former J&K Chief Minister Omar Abdullah in the Baramulla constituency during the 2024 Lok Sabha polls, running as an Independent.

Rashid, imprisoned since 2019, faces charges under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) related to alleged terror funding. He is currently detained in Tihar Jail.
