SRINAGAR

Panic gripped in southern apple town of Shopian Tuesday evening after locals near police station heard fire shots.

“It was about 7:15 PM when we heard few shots of firing behind the police station and then followed the search operation for about half an hour,” a local resident told Kashmir Life.

The local sources said that suspected militants fired few shots towards the police station and fled from the spot.

They added that Police personnel came out of the police station after some time and searched a few residential houses but nobody was arrested. “Even today morning police came and made several rounds in the area directing locals not to park their vehicles near the police station.”

But police is of the opinion that locals took fire crackers as firing shots. “In fact children might have cracked some crackers in the area on the eve of Eid-e-Milad which people took as fire shots,” SP Shopian Shawkat Ahmad Shah said adding “there was no firing at all”.
