Former Union Minister and senior Congress member, Prof Saifuddin Soz Tuesday rued the indifference of Indian civil society.

“It is so tragic and most unfortunate that the forces have opened fire at several places in South Kashmir during the past three days in which many precious lives were lost,” Soz said in a statement issued this evening. “I express deepest distress over these deaths and share the agony of the bereaved families, in full measure.”

“The state administration would be well-advised to satisfy itself fully on observance of SOP (Standard Operation Procedure) and see why the lethal weapons could not be avoided. The people in Kashmir, however, think that the SOP has been flagrantly violated,” he said. “At this critical juncture, I wish to appeal the youth for peace and ask the youth not to give any chance to forces to open fire.”

Soz deplored that “Delhi’s power elite have broken the very instruments” that would help it to be in touch with the reality in Kashmir and understand youth and the concerns in their mind!

“It is more tragic that the Indian Civil Society chose to watch the theatre of killings in Kashmir silently!” he added.

Meanwhile, I would wish the State Administration to reach the bereaved families, at the earliest, he said.
