Omar tweets after Burhan death

Observing that no militancy incident related to slain militant commander happened in his tenure, former CM and National Conference leader, Omar Abdullah on Saturday said that Kashmir’s disaffected lot has got a “new icon in Burhan Wani”.

In a series of tweets, Omar said that his party NC believes in resolution to political problem. He said that slain Burhan wasn’t the first person nor would be the last one to pick up the gun.

On Saturday morning, he wrote that the killing of Burhan would “have more consequences than his social networking activity”.

Poster boy of new age militancy, Burhan Muzaffar Wani died in a gun battle along with two of his associates on Friday evening at Bumdoora Kokernag in South Kashmir. He was six years old Hizbul Mujahedeen militant.

Omar, whose tenure was marred by 2010 civil uprising, was also reminded as how Azaadi slogans reverberated from the loud speakers of Masjids across Kashmir. Burhan was then 15 and a class tenth student when he along with his brother and friend was humiliated and beaten by SOG in his home Town Tral.

Since then, Burhan fled home, joined Hizb ranks and created a group of almost 17 colleagues who rose to fame and became a household name across Kashmir and mainland India due to their social networking skills.

The killing of Burhan, Kashmir’s 6 year old most popular militant leader, triggered unrest. His body was handed over to his family at Saturday dawn while his funeral prayers were offered at 11:30 AM.
