SRINAGAR: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Wednesday said it arrested two employees of the Public Works Department (PWD), Surankote, for demanding and accepting bribes of Rs 20,000 and Rs 5,000 respectively from a complainant for processing and releasing the complainant’s General Provident Fund (GPF).
“A case was registered by the CBI on May 5, 2025, against an Assistant Accounts Officer and a Junior Assistant on allegations that both had demanded bribes of ₹30,000 and ₹8,000 respectively from the complainant for processing and releasing the GPF amount of ₹5,04,634. After negotiation, the accused agreed to accept bribes of ₹20,000 and ₹5,000 respectively,” a statement reads.
The statement further said that the CBI laid a trap on May 6, 2025, and caught both accused red-handed while demanding and accepting the bribes from the complainant.
“Later, both were arrested and produced before the Special Judge for CBI Cases, Jammu, on May 7, 2025. They were remanded to one-day police custody,” the statement added.
Meanwhile, searches were conducted by the CBI at the residential and official premises of the accused in Poonch, leading to the recovery of some incriminating evidence. The investigation is ongoing. (KNO)
